A suicidal man was detained by police on a bridge over the A38 last night.
Emergency crews were called to a stretch of the road between Exeter and Plymouth at about 1.20am.
The road was closed at the Dart Bridge junction near Buckfastleigh.
Sgt Harry Tangye, of Devon and Cornwall Police, said southbound traffic was held while officers spoke with the man.
Both sides of the A38 were later shut, drivers were diverted and a police negotiator was called to the scene.
